    Pattern of the month meet-up

    Free for our members!

    Fabzone is pleased to present the pattern of the month club. A volunteer run project where we offer you patterns, templates and techniques so you can add your flair to the project.

    We hope to create a community of curious and creative people that will initiate a wave of new ideas and perspectives.

    Come join us at 7:30pm on the first Thursday of the month when we introduce the pattern and discuss fabrics, tweeks, and techniques to make it your own. A handout will be provided on this date, while patterns and instructions will be available at FabZone.

    Technique demos may be offered during the month, but we encourage members to swap ideas in our Discord chat, or during Fabzone open workshop hours.

    All you need to bring is yourself! 

     

  • Inkscape II

    Inkscape II

    Inkscape is possibly the most useful tool we have at FabZone!

    This class focuses on using Inkscape to convert images into vectors that can be cut on the laser or Cricut.

    Concepts include:

    • Manual tracing with the bezier tool
    • bitmap tracing
    • editing path and nodes
    • snapping tool
    • converting objects and contours to paths

    Computers are provided, but if you prefer to use your own, please install the latest version of Inkscape, available for free download at https://inkscape.org/, prior to the class. A mouse will also be useful!

    Prerequisite – Inkscape I or (prior knowledge of concepts covered in Inkscape I)

    Inkscape I

    Learn how to navigate Inkscape and make vector drawings to cut on Cricut or laser cutters.

    Concepts covered include:

    • vector vs bitmap
    • place, resize, rotate and move shapes
    • fill and stroke
    • duplicate vs copy and paste
    • align and distribute shapes
    • group and ungroup
    • path operations (union and difference)
    • text and text to path

    Computers are provided, but if you prefer to use your own, please install the latest version of Inkscape, available for free download at https://inkscape.org/, prior to the class. A mouse will be very useful too!

  • Intro to 3D printing

    Intro to 3D printing

    Learn how our 3D printers work and what you can make on them. 

    This class covers different 3D printing materials, the slicing software, as well as the settings that can be tweaked to make your prints a success. Students will have the oppotunity to load the filament and print a 3D model.

    wood inlay

    Create unique wood art from laser cut and engraved wood pieces and laser cut veneers.

    Participants will get a demonstration of the laser cutting and engraving process then will work on assembly. This includes gluing, assembling and clamping the wood parts, sanding the inlays and then polishing them to a shine. If desired, the final piece can become a keyring, earring or pendant.

    L'art du crochet : Le cours d'initiation complet 

    Ce cours s'adresse aux parfaits débutants ! C'est l'introduction idéale pour acquérir les bases fondamentales avant de vous lancer dans des projets plus avancés (comme nos ateliers d'amigurumis ou de granny squares).

    🗓️ Programme des cours

    • Cours 1 : Les bases
      • Apprendre à tenir le crochet et à faire un nœud coulant.
      • Faire une chaînette (mailles en l'air) et maîtriser la maille serrée.
      • Apprendre à identifier les différentes parties de vos mailles.

    • Cours 2 : Dompter les rangs (Compter et redresser)
      • Apprendre à compter vos mailles pour obtenir des rebords parfaitement droits.
      • Savoir exactement où et quand terminer votre rangée.
      • Faire une maille en l'air de transition pour changer de direction.
      • Astuce de pro : nous allons utiliser des marqueurs de mailles !

    • Cours 3 : De nouveaux points
      • Maîtriser la bride (double crochet) et la demi-bride (demi-double crochet).
      • Grâce à ces notions, vous serez en mesure de créer des foulards, des débarbouillettes ou tout autre projet rectangulaire !

    • Niveau requis : Parfait pour les grands débutants. Aucune expérience préalable n'est nécessaire !

    The Art of Crochet: Ultimate Beginner Bootcamp 

    This course is truly for beginners! It is the perfect foundational introduction to prepare you for more advanced projects (like our Amigurumi or Granny Square workshops).

    🗓️ Class Schedule

    • Lesson 1: The Basics
      • Holding the hook comfortably and making a slip knot.
      • Making a foundation chain and mastering the single crochet stitch.
      • Learning how to identify the different parts of your stitches.

    • Lesson 2: Taming Your Rows (Counting & Straight Edges)
      • Learning how to accurately count your stitches to keep your edges perfectly straight.
      • Knowing exactly where and when to finish your row.
      • Making a turning chain and changing directions smoothly.
      • Pro Tip: We are going to unlock the power of stitch markers!

    • Lesson 3: More Stitches
      • Mastering the double crochet and half-double crochet stitches.
      • With these core concepts, you will be fully equipped to make scarves, washcloths, or other fun rectangular items!
