    Inkscape II

    Inkscape is possibly the most useful tool we have at FabZone!

    This class focuses on using Inkscape to convert images into vectors that can be cut on the laser or Cricut.

    Concepts include:

    • Manual tracing with the bezier tool
    • bitmap tracing
    • editing path and nodes
    • snapping tool
    • converting objects and contours to paths

    Computers are provided, but if you prefer to use your own, please install the latest version of Inkscape, available for free download at https://inkscape.org/, prior to the class. A mouse will also be useful!

    Ages 12 and up

    Prerequisite – Inkscape I or (prior knowledge of concepts covered in Inkscape I)

    Learn how to navigate Inkscape and make vector drawings to cut on Cricut or laser cutters.

    Concepts covered include:

    • vector vs bitmap
    • place, resize, rotate and move shapes
    • fill and stroke
    • duplicate vs copy and paste
    • align and distribute shapes
    • group and ungroup
    • path operations (union and difference)
    • text and text to path

    Computers are provided, but if you prefer to use your own, please install the latest version of Inkscape, available for free download at https://inkscape.org/, prior to the class. A mouse will be very useful too!

    intro to knitting

    This class is for new knitters.

    Introduction to knitting: Learn the basics of knitting in this set of three classes

    1. Introduction class: You’ll be introduced to the tools and materials you need to start knitting. Then you’ll learn a simple cast-on technique, and how to make a knit stitch.

    2. Next steps: You’ll learn how to read a basic knitting pattern, and practice the skills learned in the first class.

    3. The other side: purl stitch. In the third class, you’ll learn how to make a purl stitch, how to use knit and purl stitches together, and then how to bind off your work when you’re done. 

    To benefit from this class, we highly recommend practicing between sessions.

    Projects in this class are a swatch, and a mug cozy or kerchief

  • Intro to 3D printing

    Intro to 3D printing

    Learn how our 3D printers work and what you can make on them. 

    This class covers different 3D printing materials, the slicing software, as well as the settings that can be tweaked to make your prints a success. Students will have the oppotunity to load the filament and print a 3D model.

    wood inlay

    Create unique wood art from laser cut and engraved wood pieces and laser cut veneers.

    Participants will get a demonstration of the laser cutting and engraving process then will work on assembly. This includes gluing, assembling and clamping the wood parts, sanding the inlays and then polishing them to a shine. If desired, the final piece can become a keyring, earring or pendant.

    This course is for beginners.

    Lesson 1: The basics

    •    Holding the hook and making a slip knot

    •    Making a chain and mastering the single crochet stitch

    •    Identifying the parts of the stitches

    Lesson 2: Counting stitches and keeping your edges straight.

    •    Learn how to count stitches

    •    Know when to finish your row.

    •    Make a chain and change direction

    •    Tip: we're going to use stitch markers!

    Lesson 3: More stitches

    •    Double crochet

    •    Half double crochet

    With these concepts, you will be able to make scarves, washcloths, or other rectangular items.
